Up to $18k to be spent in search for superintendent

The search for a new superintendent for the Fallbrook Union High School District continues as the Board of Trustees voted Monday night, January 28, to pay up to $18,000 to the California School Board Association search firm to work on their behalf.

The board heard presentations from three search firms on January 24, including Leadership Associates and Young Attea and Associates, all of which were professional in their approach, said board president Bill O’Connor. Fees for the other two candidates reached up to $26,000.

According to board director Lynn Colburn, the California School Board Association, being a local company, not only has a better understanding of the Fallbrook community and its district’s needs, its charges would be less and include a workshop for board members. Further, while the two other search firms would limit the number of candidates presented for consideration to fill the position, the California School Board Association would not.

Board director Dennis Allen commented that using a local firm would reduce travel expenses for presentations during the process as well.

Dr. Robert L. French will serve in the interim in the position until a permanent superintendent is chosen. The search process could take up to four months, says O’Connor.

In December of 2007, the board voted 3-2 (with Colburn and Allen voting ‘no’) to buy-out Tom Anthony’s contract early, costing the District close to $400,000 before replacement search costs.
