Events draw parents, students at San Onofre School

San Onofre School, one of two Fallbrook Union Elementary School District schools on Camp Pendleton, hosted two events for parents and students on January 23.

The first was a parent workshop focused on reading comprehension, taught by seventh and eighth grade English teacher Laura Herter.

With standing room only, parents learned about the various levels of comprehension their kindergarten through eighth grade students are expected to master.

Strategies and tips were provided for parents to use with their children at home. Herter modeled how a parent might read with a child at home to foster better comprehension skills.

This workshop has been offered for the past four years to parents of students at all grade levels.

Later that same evening, parents and students gathered to view the Science Exploratorium, which provided an opportunity for eighth grade students to demonstrate mastery of physical science concepts.

Each student was required to research a topic, develop a working model and then teach the ‘how and why’ to visiting guests.

Third- through fifth-graders attended the morning sessions, while parents and other family members were invited for the evening visit.

The interactive exhibits allowed participants to learn such concepts as pulley systems, lung volume, levers, Bernouli’s principle, hydraulics and more.

The Science Exploratorium was facilitated by seventh and eighth grade science teacher Bryan Gunner.

The attendance at both activities demonstrated the high level of parent involvement, hard work ethic on the part of the students and level of care on the part of the teachers.
