Kalbfell appointed to Airpark Advisory Committee

Ken Kalbfell was selected to fill a vacancy on the Fallbrook Airpark Advisory Committee.

A 5-0 San Diego County Board of Supervisors vote January 29 placed Kalbfell on the committee to replace Joe Fedorchak on the five-member advisory committee. Kalbfell’s term will expire on January 3, 2011, although he may be reappointed.

“I’m pleased to be able to serve and help the community,” Kalbfell said.

Kalbfell moved from Carlsbad to the Rolling Hills Estates area of Fallbrook three years ago. He is a San Diego native who graduated from Point Loma High School before obtaining Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Business Administration degrees from San Diego State University.

Kalbfell is currently the president of Instruments, Inc., a manufacturing company which makes military electronic instruments. Instruments, Inc., is not involved in aviation electronics.

“Avionics is very specialized, so we leave all that to the professionals,” Kalbfell said.

Kalbfell’s father founded Instruments, Inc., and Kalbfell has worked for the company for the past 43 years. He took over as president in 1979. His father passed away in 1987.

Kalbfell first obtained his pilot’s license in 1967 and was a flight instructor in the late 1960s. He was away from aviation for nearly 35 years before returning to the hobby approximately five years ago after joining a friend in a private plane.

Kalbfell currently owns a twin-engine Piper Aztec which is hangared at Fallbrook Community Airpark.

Kalbfell had been attending Fallbrook Airpark Advisory Committee meetings prior to Fedorchak’s resignation. “I offered my services,” he said of the vacancy.

Although Instruments, Inc., does not manufacture aviation parts, Kalbfell felt that his manufacturing background and business experience would benefit the committee.

“I felt I would be of use to them,” he said. “I understand the principles involved in the maintenance and modification of the airport.”

Kalbfell’s first meeting as an advisory board member took place February 4. The Fallbrook Airpark Advisory Committee meets quarterly, usually on the first Monday of each quarter’s second month.

Kalbfell has no specific goals other than to listen to proposals and help the local aviation community. “There are rules to follow and procedures,” he said. “You work with it and get stuff done.”
