Gonzales, Hasvold, Green, Korean honored

Green, a field hockey player, has played at the varsity level for three years and helped coach younger players at Zion Lutheran School and Potter Junior High. She has participated in the FUTURES program, attended the National Field Hockey Festival and assisted with the field hockey summer league program.

A member of Warriors for Christ and the FHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Green was named Most Inspirational on the high school team this year and earned a Second Team All-League title for the season. She carries a 3.9 grade point average and works at the Grand Tradition.

“God has made such an impact on my life; He gave me stability and kept me on track,” said Green. “I’m reaping the benefits now. Next year, I plan on attending Point Loma [Nazarene].”

Bret Hasvold was selected for the Student of the Month honor after a nomination by Assistant Principal John Hayek, former athletic director of Fallbrook High.

Much of what Hayek reflected on centered on the peer leadership role Hasvold assumed after the tragic death of cross country coach Marty Hauck.

“When we lost Marty, Bret was the focal point; he was close to the coach,” Hauck said. “

was hope for us. He epitomized what we needed to do as a school and a community, which was go on.”

Hasvold, a varsity cross country runner who holds distinguished records at both the county and state levels, is said to be persevering, dedicated and humble. Showing significant commitment to the team, Coach Marco Arias added, Hasvold “led his teammates through a difficult time.”

“[This honor] really means a lot,” Hasvold said. “It is a really good feeling. I want to thank the committee and Coach Hayek. Coach Arias has really been an inspiration to me and helped get me through the hard times.”

Hasvold said he hopes to continue (cross country) running in college and is looking at attending either Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Long Beach State to study fitness or sports management.

Nick Korean was named a Student of the Month after being recommended for the honor by English teacher Connie Fellios.

“Nick is an exemplary student, volunteer and person,” Fellios said. “He shows his love of life daily. [Nick] meets his teachers’ high expectations. He will excel in college and throughout his life.”

Korean has earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America, has actively been involved as an entertainer in Madrigals and is said to be a ‘gifted performer’ in school and community theater.

He holds a black belt in Taekwondo, assists in raising guide dogs for the blind and is said to be of strong character, kind and respectful.

In addition, Korean has been actively involved in the school newspaper and a key member of the award-winning yearbook staff. His goal, he stated, is to attend Chapman University in Orange and study filmmaking.

“I didn’t realize I’ve done so many things,” Korean said with a smile. “I want to thank Mrs. Fellios for helping me all these years and thank all my teachers for challenging me.”

Jerry Gonzales was honored as a Student of the Month after the recommendation of Ivy High School librarian Renee Koch.

“It’s a pleasure to have Jerry at Ivy,” Koch said. “He is well-liked by his peers and the staff. He is the kind of student you wish all of them were. He is a well-rounded young man.”

Gonzales is on the Principal’s Honor Roll, attends ROP classes at night, serves on the school’s site council and is on the WASC committee.

Described as a “dream student,” Gonzales is said to inspire other students with his joyful attitude. In the past he has received certificates of recognition for perfect attendance. He also assisted with the school’s canned food drive for the needy.

“I never was motivated to do well in school and then we had a rep from UTI come in; after that I got motivated,” Gonzales said. “Ivy has been a great turnaround for me.”

The Fallbrook Community Student of the Month Committee organizes and presents the recognition program each month with the support of numerous local businesses and organizations.
