Fallbrook Energy Consultants helps with Title 24 reports, energy efficiency

In his career as a licensed general contractor, Doug Williams decided to take a slight detour and open Fallbrook Energy Consultants.

“We’ve been in business for a few years and I really like what I do,” said Williams.

He decided it was important to take this career path because he had seen how important of an issue energy was becoming in the building industry.

“Energy has become increasingly important in our lives,” said Williams. “And in the last few years it has grown in importance.”

Williams chooses now to use his expertise in the building industry behind the scenes for designers, architects, contractors and homeowners.

Since his general contractor days, Williams has achieved some solid certifications. He became a Certified Energy Plans Examiner (CEPE), Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Rater and a specialist in California’s Title 24 Energy Compliance Code.

Those who plan to build or remodel a home, explained Williams, need to comply with the Title 24 California Energy Code.

“The code says that your house needs to have a certain degree of efficiency because [the regulatory agency] does not want you wasting huge amounts of energy,” he said.

Once an initial blueprint is created, Williams takes those building plans and inputs the information into a software system. This information may include the water heater specifications, insulation, ceiling issues, lumber and windows.

“Once the computer spits out those numbers, I can change those parameters for what is needed for the project,” he said.

It is at this point that Williams can manipulate the numbers to suggest what is needed for a particular job in order to meet the desired level of energy efficiency.

“My background in building really takes my job to a different level,” shared Williams.

As a construction and energy consultant, Williams is highly capable of offering various design options. “I can also offer ideas for different energy efficient alternatives.”

Keeping up to date with the ever-changing guidelines, Fallbrook Energy Consultants will provide the necessary documentation to acquire a Title 24.

“You need to comply with Title 24 just to get a building permit,” said Williams.

This report will also include all those required forms needed to receive that permit and plan check.

Williams explained that his company’s methodology can actually eliminate construction waste and save homeowner money. His software and keen insight into construction allow him to compile a list of the type and amount of materials that will be used for a given project.

“Because of Title 24, a home today can put out less amounts of carbon footprint than it used to,” said Williams.

And for Williams, that’s a great thing.

On a personal level, Williams and his wife, Donna Shanahan, abide by home energy efficiency. Recently, they purchased a tankless hot water heater.

“It has saved us a lot of money,” said Williams, “and we never run out of hot water.”

As far as household appliances, if anything breaks and needs replacement, they purchase Energy Star efficient products. Although these items might cost more, Williams says it’s worth it.

“You use less energy and it saves money with utility bills over the long run,” he said.
