Tips seem to be expected

This is in response to the waiters and waitresses who have sent Letters to the Editor regarding tips left after dinner.

I am in full agreement that a tip left for good service is the right thing to do. I also agree that sometimes the service is not so great; however, if the [waitperson’s] attitude shows concern for our enjoyment, the tip should show our thank you.

Now comes the other side. In our carpet business, we make house calls to show our product, which should be seen in the home to make a selection. Why not tip us?

Our installers work eight, 10, 12 hours in the home to finish sooner. Would a tip be mandatory?

You buy shoes, drapery, cars, homes and on and on and on. Do you leave a tip?

Tips seem to be expected whether or not the service is good – not only expected, but you want to tell us how much we should leave.

The next time you ask, “Do you want change?” and you did not provide the service we all expect, I will say, “Yes, I do.”
