Earth Day event March 30

OCEANSIDE — How can each person make a difference in saving the environment? Individuals can learn how at North County’s Earth Day Celebration at Mission San Luis Rey Sunday, March 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year the theme of this fun-filled family event is sustainability... how to personally work toward environmental enhancement.

Every year, more than 25,000 fourth-graders visit Mission San Luis Rey to learn about early California history and the role of the missions. Many children make models of the mission as part of their project. At this day-long event, they will learn how to make a recyclable mission model.

The event will feature interactive and educational activities for children of all ages, more than 40 vendors and exhibitors focused on recycling, helping both children and adults gain an appreciation of the environment, and a farmer’s market.

A ladybug release in the award-winning mission rose garden and drumming courtesy of the Museum of Making Music are a few of the day’s highlights.

As an extension of the fourth-grade California missions curriculum, Mission San Luis Rey is sponsoring an essay contest for fourth grade students focused on the ancient peppertree on the property.
