Tully 10th in first 2008 race

Fallbrook driver Brian Tully finished tenth in his first main event of the 2008 season.

Tully took the original green flag of the Street Stocks main event March 1 at Perris Auto Speedway on the inside of the tenth row, but he avoided wrecks and overcame poor visibility to earn the top-ten finish.

“Put some weight on the rear so it had bite coming off the turn,” Tully said. “I could worry about seeing rather than worry about steering.”

Drizzle peppered the half-mile dirt oval throughout the night, and track officials reduced breaks in an effort to complete the racing schedule before the arrival of any rainfall heavy enough to make the track and pits too muddy. “I’m glad the track didn’t call the race,” Tully said.

Tully finished seventh in his heat race after starting the six-lap heat on the outside of the fourth row. His tenth-row start in the 20-lap main event became an eighth-row position on the restart after several cars were involved in a first-lap crash.

When Chris Thompson, who had reached second place behind eventual winner Jerry Knight, left the track due to car problems, Tully inherited tenth place.

“I was able to drive the car through the corner,” Tully said. “I think I still might have too low of a gear.”

Tully’s most noticeable problem was mud on his front screen. “I couldn’t see out of it,” he said. “I had to drive the last few laps with my visor up.”

Steve McCain provided the setup which allowed Tully to improve his performance in the corners. Tully’s crew also included Howard Bymark and Brandon Davis.
