Supervisors accept $250,000 terrorism prevention grant

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 March 11, with Supervisor Ron Roberts absent, to accept a $250,000 Law Enforcement Terrorism Prevention Program grant.

The funding will be used for the maintenance and support of the San Diego Regional Terrorism Threat Assessment Center.

The supervisors’ action established $242,500 of appropriations for the Sheriff’s Department on behalf of the San Diego Law Enforcement Coordination Center and $7,500 of appropriations for the county Office of Emergency Services for management and administration of the San Diego Regional Terrorism Threat Center.

The Law Enforcement Coordination Center consists of the Regional Terrorism Threat Assessment center, the Joint Terrorism Task Force, and Criminal Intelligence.

The purpose of the coordination center is to share information.

“We have been very diligent in protecting for any other kind of eventuality that might happen,” said Supervisor Bill Horn.

The Law Enforcement Terrorism Prevention Program funding was initiated through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and funding for local agencies in California is administered through the California Office of Homeland Security.

The grant term runs through March 31, 2010.

The funding will be used to purchase hardware and software which will complete the CopLink project and connect CopLink to local data bases.

Some of the funds will also be used for a pilot project to implement Microsoft’s FusionX suite of products which is intended to enhance intelligence information sharing in the region.
