Clouded facts in Granite's letter [Opinion, 3/6/08]

Interesting that Gary Johnson should compare annexation to “taking someone’s house without consent.” Granite only leases the land where the quarry is proposed. Annexation is a perfect way to protect not only the ecological reserve but the surrounding hills from inappropriate land use; landfills and quarries come to mind.

I fail to see how denying a quarry gracing our beautiful hills would create a need for more police and fire services. I would think having asphalt plants, diesel fuel and explosives stored on the site would certainly create a need for concern about fire danger… with the unpredictable wind speeds that blow through these hills.

To say that “Liberty Quarry would not cause a significant impact on the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve” is inaccurate and shameful! Severing the last wildlife corridor for the mountain lion and other species from coastal to inland mountains is an impact. High-frequency blasting vibration, light pollution and crystalline silica dust is negative impact… on animals and people.

How wonderful to know that this pit mine will have some “preserved open space” around it. There is already “preserved open space” without the intrusion of a quarry.

I’m always astounded when Granite claims, “This mine will reduce traffic and protect air quality.” This statement insults the intelligence of the people living here.

We look at the hills and we see open space, beauty and the borders of our communities. Granite looks and sees dollar signs.

We have the power; in our dedication, in our perseverance, to save this land. Go to http://www.nogravelquarry.com for unclouded facts.
