Quarry owners are after money only

In response to Gary Johnson’s letter [Village News, 3/6/08] it is obvious Granite Construction is trying to convince people that opening a quarry in our area is in “our” best interest. I think it’s all about money.

He said Granite “controls” all 414 acres of land for the quarry. He didn’t say they “own” it all – yet. First, they have to make sure they can make their millions; then they will buy the land.

Mr. Johnson wants to promote the quarry as the City of Temecula’s financial savior. Again, it’s money. Thank goodness city leaders realize there is more than that to quality of life.

What didn’t Mr. Johnson put in writing? That is what we should pay attention to:

1. Why doesn’t his company put in writing that they “guarantee” there will be no health consequences for any residents, or if there is, that they will be financially responsible?

2. Why doesn’t he put in writing his company “guarantees” to reduce truck traffic on Interstate 15? He won’t do that because he knows only too well that they are only blowing smoke (or silica) in an attempt to make more money.

Mr. Johnson invites us to look at Granite’s Web site, which cites health studies that are eight to 10 years old, and one award they “won” because their Indio plant went more than two years without violating environmental standards (out of the 60-plus years they have been in business).

We don’t need smoke, or silica.
