Hasvold signs letter of intent with Long Beach State

Fallbrook High School senior Bret Hasvold has signed a letter of intent to run track and cross-country for Long Beach State.

“I was glad I was able to find the right school,” Bret said. “It’s a huge load off my shoulders. I can just relax now.”

Bret had also been considering Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Northern Arizona, and Arizona State before choosing Long Beach State. “It was just what I was looking for in a college,” he said of Long Beach State. “I love the coach. He has a lot of the same principles as my coaches now.”

Chris and Lisa Hasvold have two children. Ryan, who is now a sophomore at the University of Southern California, was a member of Fallbrook High School’s cross-country team as well as the Warrior soccer team before graduating.

At one time Ryan was the better-known Fallbrook High School athlete, and he also is given credit for bringing his younger brother into the running sports.

“The summer going into freshman year, my parents wanted me to run with my brother,” Bret said.

Bret tried out for cross-country at the beginning of his freshman year. “The first day I was basically running with the varsity kids,” he said.

Bret spent four years on the cross-country varsity. He has been with the Warrior track and field team since his freshman year, spending ninth grade on the junior varsity before moving up to the varsity as a sophomore.

“Coach [Marty] Hauck was huge part of that. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I’d still be doing it,” Bret said.

Bret also played basketball on Fallbrook High School’s freshman team as a ninth-grader, although he hasn’t played any winter sports since.

On the track and field team Bret runs the 800-meter, 1,600-meter, and 3,200-meter individual races and the 4x400 relay. “Just looking forward to track season. Should be a fun one,” he said.

Bret has set some goals for his senior track and field season. “I would like to win league, CIF, and top five in the state meet,” he said.

Winning the league and CIF meets and placing in the top five in the state meet were also Bret’s pre-season goals for his senior cross-country season. His time of 15:51 on the North County Conference finals 3.1-mile course not only won the Avocado League meet but was also the fastest among all runners in the three participating leagues.

His time of 15:59 in the San Diego Section championship was 20 seconds faster than his closest competitor, and his time of 15:24 at the state meet was the fourth-fastest performance among Division I runners.

As a junior Bret finished third in the 1,600-meter run at the section finals, earning him his first track and field qualification for the state meet. His time of 4:19.32 in the metric mile placed him 16th among the state’s runners.

His junior cross-country season saw him finish third among Division I runners in the CIF San Diego Section meet and 21st in the state meet.

Bret, who was born in Fallbrook Hospital and is a lifelong Fallbrook resident, attended Zion Lutheran before his high school years.
