Mentors top list of Angel Society donations

FALLBROOK — Angel Society board member Mania Black said that she enjoyed a recent meeting with students participating in Mentoring Associates, a nonprofit organization directed by Jerry Donohue.

“It was heartwarming to know that our funds are being used in this very worthwhile program,” said board member Olive Brasso.

Angel Society recently donated $1,000 to Mentoring Associates.

A donation of $2,000 was given to another mentoring program operating under the sponsorship of the Fallbrook Citizens’ Crime Prevention Committee. This program has five after-school mentoring sites.

Other school programs assisted this month were the Fallbrook Union High School girls interscholastic soccer team with $500, the Fallbrook Girls Softball League program for middle school-age girls with $500 and Sullivan Middle School eighth grade class with $500.

Additional donations include $1,500 to Rally for Children’s Arts in the Park program to pay for the hands-on “Mad Science” station; $1,500 to North County Disabled Services, which provides educational, recreational and cultural services to participants from all age groups; $2,000 to Operation Homefront in support of the military, the families they leave behind and wounded warriors after they return home; and $2,000 to Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green (KFCG).

KFCG received their initial funding from the Angel Society and to date have collected 4,200 pounds of spent batteries with their Household Battery Recycling Program. This time they were in need of funds to help with the shipping and recycling of collected batteries.

Also, donations of excess clothing were sent to a reservation for victims and survivors of domestic violence in New Mexico and to hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan for distribution to needy local children.

Funds are raised primarily through the Angel Shop, located at 1002 South Main Avenue, at which community members make donations and customers shop for bargains.
