Attack on marriage more like attack on humanity

Contrary to what Mr. Corcoran believes, same-sex attraction has been prominent throughout time. What has happened is that society has chosen to omit that fact from our history books.

Historical greats such as Plato, Socrates and Alexander the Great were all homosexuals. Redefining and denying the truth is a lot easier to swallow than acknowledging reality.

Interestingly enough, the rights we are denying homosexuals are hauntingly familiar to the oppression society has inflicted on other minority groups.

Denying homosexuals the right to be married in the eyes of the law does nothing, as it does not take away the commitment between two people, regardless of their sexual orientation. A wedding is only ceremonial; it is not what defines what a true marriage is.

Sexual orientation does not impair nor does it aid in one’s ability to successfully raise a child. Children are blind to things such as color, appearance or sexual orientation. It is only because we teach them to fear these things do they begin to label people as different.

We, as a society, will never advance as long as there is hate in our hearts and fear in our minds. Perhaps, if we thought more as children do, we would begin to accept people for who they are, rather than labeling them for the petty differences that divide us. Maybe then the world would not only be a happier place but a more accepting one as well.
