RE: 'True cost of annexation' (Opinion, 3/6/08)

Public relations personnel are vigilantly aggrandizing the wonderful asset this industrial complex will be to our communities, as suggested in the letter in the Village News on March 6 by Gary W. Johnson.

An example of their distorted statements is, “Liberty Quarry will provide a significant benefit to the region through traffic reduction.”

It has been stated by the quarry personnel themselves that there will be 1,600 trucks entering and leaving the quarry each working day, using Rainbow entrances and exits off of and onto Interstate 15. This is an astronomical increase in traffic, not a reduction!

Mr. Johnson cites “air quality protection” as a significant benefit to the region. There is no possible way of protecting everyone from the microscopic particles of crystalline silica that results from crushing rock, which is one of the main accomplishments of the quarry.

These deadly particles can cause scar tissue to form in the lungs, which reduces their ability to extract oxygen from the air we breathe; this disease is known as silicosis.

Inhalation of crystalline silica has been associated with other diseases such as bronchitis, tuberculosis and lung cancer.

In a recent news conference held by Dr. Dan Robbins at Morgan Hill Park in Redhawk, it was disclosed that 27 medical doctors have just added their names to those opposed to Liberty Quarry, bringing the total number of physicians to twenty-nine.

Dr. Robbins explained thoroughly why so many of his medical colleagues are now voicing their opposition.
