Bay Ewald wins 4-Way Test Speech Contest

Bay Ewald, a Fallbrook High School senior, won the San Diego County Rotary District 5340 Rotary “4-Way Test” Speech Contest at the recent District Finals meeting held at the La Jolla Marriott.

Bay, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fallbrook, first had to be in the top five out of more than 24 Fallbrook High School students to perform at the Fallbrook weekly meeting.

Then she went on to compete at the North San Diego Sub-Regional finals in Rancho Bernardo. After that, she moved on to the North County Regional Finals, also in La Jolla, to get to the District Finals.

More than 150 people enjoyed the performance. Bay’s speech on child abuse, her great poise, endearing smile and sincerity resonated with the judges, who deemed her the winner over the other seven finalists.

All in all, she competed against 48 students on her road to victory.

“This is a tribute not only to Bay Ewald and her wonderful parents but also to Lutz Zastro, the Fallbrook Union High School coach, and her sponsor, the Rotary Club of Fallbrook,” said Dick Goodlake, Youth Services Chair for the Rotary Club of Fallbrook.

Bay received a beautiful plaque and a $1,000 check for winning the contest.

Contestants had as a requirement the use of the Rotary 4-Way Test in their speech: 1) Is it the truth? 2) Is it fair to all concerned? 3) Will it build goodwill and better friendships? and 4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
