Workshop focuses on plein-air oil painting

FALLBROOK — Michael Obermeyer, an award-winning plein air oil painter from Laguna, gave a demonstration April 20 for the attendees of a workshop sponsored by Fallbrook Art Association. After the demonstration, students painted scenes either from their own photographs or from photos taken by Obermeyer.

The workshop emphasized the use of oil paint to create plein air-style paintings without actually going out into the fields to do them. This was some students’ first foray into working with oil paints, while others were experienced painters in other media, such as watercolor and acrylic.

Obermeyer has a 20-year career in illustration, including works for Disney Studios, the Anaheim Angels, McDonnell Douglas, Coldwell Banker and the United States Air Force. Many of his paintings are in the US Air Force Historical Art Collection in the Smithsonian Institute and the Pentagon.
