T-ball team carries Storm name this year

Big storms are often accompanied by smaller ones. Such is the case for The Lake Elsinore Storm.

This year, the Bonsall Fallbrook Little League t-ball team played their first game of the season going by the name The Bonsall Fallbrook Storm. The t-ball team’s board of directors chooses a new name each season.

Usually, the board chooses a different team every year. This year, however, the board re-adopted the Storm name, which it used last year. Feedback from the parents of the players drove the board’s decision, according to Tim Gross, a Bonsall Fallbrook Little League board member.

“A lot of residents of Fallbrook go to Storm games,” Gross said. “The kids just love it.”

The board always chooses a professional team name for the Little League players and the A-class affiliate of that team for their t-ball players, according to Gross.

“It’s a tradition,” he said.

This year, the Little League team is playing as the Bonsall Fallbrook Padres. The seven t-ball players wear uniforms that match the team whose name and logo they adopt.

“The kids love the logo. My son still wears his [hat] from last year and still loves it,” Gross said.

In addition, by choosing the Padres and the Storm, the kids can see the teams whose logos they wear. On May 3, the Storm t-ball team will run the bases at The Diamond stadium in Lake Elsinore before the game starts as part of the Storm’s Field of Dreams event.

“The [Storm] makes them feel special,” Gross said.

Nathaniel Zaskalan, 6, a Storm t-ball player who suffers from congenital heart problems, will throw out the first ball of that game.

“They’re all pretty excited about [the event],” said Renée Zaskalan, Nathaniel’s mother.

During the Storm’s Field of Dreams events, selected young people are invited to meet the Storm players and stand in the field with them while the National Anthem is sung.
