GATE students visit the Getty Museum

Recently, a bus full of excited La Paloma students, parents and teachers traveled from Fallbrook to Los Angeles, braving rush hour traffic as they set off for a day at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

This museum “seeks to further knowledge of the visual arts and to nurture critical seeing by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art of the highest quality.” The Getty provides resources for teachers, guided by the California State content standards, and offers Guided and Self-Guided School visits.

La Paloma’s ArtDay program teacher, Vonda Day, arranged this special trip for La Paloma’s GATE students to take place on a non-school day. The children took part in grade-level appropriate activities as they expanded their appreciation for the Arts and Humanities.

They were able to tour the entire museum, viewing pre-20th century European artworks and 19th and 20th century American and European photographic exhibits. The building, designed by architect Richard Meier, is a work of art in itself.

After a full day of art and cultural enrichment, the tired students and their adult supervisors re-boarded the bus for a three-hour trip through city traffic. It was a great day.
