Truth or fiction

Whenever I read a letter by Joe Howard Crews I wonder if he believes the nonsense in the letter or is he just testing to see what kind of reaction he will get.

He uses gross exaggeration in stating that tens of millions have died in wars defending the Constitution. A little research shows that the Civil War had the highest number of fatalities at 664,000 – of which 213,000 were in combat and the remainder from other causes, primarily disease. A close approximation for the total for all other wars, starting with the Revolutionary War, is 670,000. Again, the actual combat deaths are less than half the total.

President Lincoln is revered as one of our most famous presidents. How can that be when he was responsible for nearly half the total number of US war deaths since our country began? He had the opportunity to allow the south to secede and there would have been no war and no soldiers would have died. It can only be explained by accepting the fact that the elimination of slavery and keeping the union together was, in the long term, a greater benefit to more people than the loss of soldiers who gave their lives.

Sometimes evil is worth opposing.
