With God all things are possible

As persons, we all need someone to give us another perspective, to see things in another way, to realize a true reality.

We need, from time to time, to have someone bring us down to earth, to see ourselves from a totally different view, to correct a behavior or character, to give a needed advice.

The rich man whom Jesus encountered (Matthew 19:16-22) was most likely honest, devout, responsible, and dedicated. He obeyed all the commandments. But Jesus as a friend brought him down to earth to help him see the things of heaven. This he couldn’t see.

Jesus said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” It is possible to break from the bond of sin, that which keeps us from God. Like gravity, we are bound by guilt, resentment, and hate. Like gravity we bound by greed, selfishness, and callousness. Like gravity, economics has bound us to profit over safety, profit over health, profit over earth, profit over benevolence.

Jesus stands there and sees the hearts all of us. Jesus knew the true heart of the rich man. His riches became his god. The poor widow gave more, because she gave all she had. The Pharisees were condemned because their hearts were cold as stone. Nathaniel was called as a disciple because he had no deceit.

We wonder today what the world is coming to. The first scenario doesn’t look good – recession. The second scenario doesn’t look good – collapsing environment. The third scenario doesn’t look good – increased violence.

But the true scenario underlines them all: “With God, all things are possible.” To God we need to turn, on Christ we must depend, and our part we all are mandated to do. Like a friend Jesus is standing on the side, ready to bring strength, insight, advice, and salvation to all who are ready to receive.
