Warrior gymnasts second in league meet , Sandoval wins optional bars

Fallbrook High School’s gymnastics team placed second at the Avocado League meet May 6.

The Warriors accumulated 194.675 points, finishing behind the 213.4-point total of league champion Mount Carmel. Our Lady of Peace was third with 166.4 points, and La Costa Canyon placed fourth with 142.5 points.

“That’s awesome,” Fallbrook coach Debbie Mericle said of the Warriors’ second-place finish.

Fallbrook junior Janeva Sandoval won the optional bars event with a score of 9.075 points and finished second in the optional beam competition with 8.975 points. “Janeva has been a blessing,” Mericle said. “She just keeps coming through.”

Sandoval qualified for the CIF competition in the bars and had already qualified in the beam. Fallbrook senior Maggie Sellers placed fourth in the optional vault at the league finals, earning qualification for the CIF meet in that event.

Two other Fallbrook gymnasts, Kayla Alonso and Bryanna Cusimano, qualified for the CIF meet’s compulsory all-around during the league meet.
