Celebrate life, battle cancer June 21-22

FALLBROOK — For 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22, local residents, their friends and family members will have an opportunity to celebrate life and battle cancer by participating in the Fifth Annual Fallbrook Relay for Life at Fallbrook High School.

Seventy-five percent of all proceeds stay in the local community to help cancer patients and their families.

“Lace up your tennis shoes, pack your tent and sleeping bag and join the fun and festivities,” says Mary Ann Marcello.

The family-oriented event will feature entertainment and many activities throughout the 24-hour period and be open to the public. Free food will be provided for all relay participants.

Opening ceremonies start at 9 a.m. on Saturday featuring the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1924 Color Guard and Alinah Lopez singing the National Anthem. Cancer survivor Mary Ellen Langlois will speak and Miss Fallbrook and her princesses will be in attendance.

Live entertainment begins at 11 a.m. with local musician Britt Doehring. Ballet Folklorico Citali dance troupe, classic rock/blues Crystal Sage band, acoustic guitarist Tim Lee, guitarist David McMaster (who will have his long hair cut prior to his performance to donate to Locks of Love), reggae band Roots Vision, the Senior Follies, a martial arts demonstration and other entertainment will continue throughout the day and evening.

DJs Cory Carrier and Thomas Stewart will assist in the event as well.

In addition, activities will include face painting, a giant slide and jump house, gold panning with the Fallbrook Gem & Mineral Society and an exotic animal show by Pacific Animal Productions.

North County Fire will offer two Heartsaver AED CPR classes, one on Saturday morning and one in the afternoon. Emergency vehicles will also be on display.

The “must-see” life and remembrance Lumanaria Ceremony begins at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Midnight Madness follows at 10 p.m. and continues until 6 a.m. on Sunday and will include raffles, contests, karaoke and other fun activities.

From 6 to 7 on Sunday morning, Lola Wheeler will instruct a yoga/Pilates class, followed by breakfast and entertainment. Closing ceremonies begin at 8 a.m.
