Six male soccer players earn all-league berths

Six members of Fallbrook High School’s boys soccer team were given all-league recognition by the Avocado League’s coaches.

Seniors Danny Barajas, Manny Garcia, and Austin Moffat earned first-team league honors while seniors Juan DeLaRosa, Bryan Dunckel, and Diego Mondragon were honorable mention selections.

“We felt like we were just as good as any other team,” said Fallbrook coach Andy DeSouza.

A 2-0 first-round playoff loss February 20 at Helix ended Fallbrook’s season with an overall record of 8-6-10. The Warriors had a 5-1-4 record in league play, where standings positions are determined by awarding three points for a win and one point for a tie.

Rancho Buena Vista’s 6-1-3 league record gave the Longhorns 21 points and the league championship, Vista’s 6-2-2 Avocado League mark was worth 20 points, and Fallbrook placed third with 19 points.

“Three is an excellent number to have on the first team,” DeSouza said.

Barajas, Garcia, and Moffat were all three-year starters. “I felt like all of these guys were first-team caliber players,” DeSouza said. “They were so deserving of it.”

Barajas is a center midfielder, Garcia played sweeper, and Moffat performed as an outside midfielder. “We had a really solid team without any real superstars on it,” DeSouza said. “These were the three guys that kind of stood out.”

Dunckel and Mondragon are defenders and DeLaRosa is a center-midfielder. None of the second-team selections wore a Fallbrook uniform.

Fallbrook loses 11 seniors from the 2008 team, including all six all-league selections. “We have a few underclassmen that were major contributors,” DeSouza said. “We have a few younger guys that can step up and play.”
