The nuclear trump card

Why is current US foreign policy so fixated on preventing the Iranians from developing their own nuclear industry – including uranium enrichment? To hear George Bush tell it, they can’t be trusted with this technology because they could become a threat to world peace. Compared to whom?

Pakistan and India both have nuclear weapons. Are they unstable? Pakistan certainly is not to be trusted – India not so much. Then there’s North Korea. Are they unstable? How about Red China? Does their possession of nuclear weapons give you a warm, fuzzy feeling?

What about NATO? Britain and France, of course, have self-developed nuclear weapons. Are they dependable? I recall that France made a dismal showing against Hitler in the 1940s!

Germany, Spain and the other NATO countries have nuclear weapons – US provided under the NATO umbrella. Close to home, Canada certainly is a nuclear power – and quite frankly I feel more secure with them than I do with George Bush’s finger on the nuclear trigger!

So, what is it all about? Well, it’s Israel, of course! They have a large nuclear arsenal and would like to remain the only Middle East country to possess this trump card. As the Israel surrogates, the US Armed forces are dedicated to the continuation of this “status quo.”
