Guac Girls get experience in Cal Cup

The Guac Girls field hockey team played in the Cal Cup tournament during Memorial Day Weekend, providing experience to the Fallbrook High School students who are expected to be on the field hockey team for the fall 2008 season.

“The girls were competitive and they let us see what we needed to do for next year,” said Kathy Waite, who coaches both the Guac Girls and the Fallbrook High School varsity field hockey team. “We had some neat things happen with some of our younger kids.”

The team cannot officially represent Fallbrook High School when playing in any competition outside of the CIF field hockey season. Without the ability to call themselves the Warriors, the team adopted the name Guac Girls for such tournaments and for the indoor league.

The May 24-26 tournament took place at Moorpark Junior College and at Cal Lutheran, but four of the five opponents the Guac Girls played in Ventura County were San Diego County teams. One of those was an all-star team and all five opponents played seniors.

Waite took no seniors. “I told the girls we are here to set up our team for next year,” she said.

In addition to providing the players with experience for the upcoming high school season, the Cal Cup also provides some sophomores and juniors with the opportunity to play field hockey beyond their high school careers.

“At Cal Cup there’s college coaches that come out and look,” Waite said. “We put a little bio together for all the girls who are interested in college.”

One of Fallbrook’s seniors, goalie Roslyn Reynoso, played in the women’s division rather than in the high school division.

Reynoso’s team reached the Gold Cup championship game before losing in a penalty stroke shootout. “That was good experience for her,” Waite said.

The Guac Girls used two different goalkeepers; Johna Jordan and Jessalyn Norton were both freshman with no varsity experience.

“That’s a big step up,” Waite said. “They did great.”

Two of Fallbrook’s goals were scored by freshmen, specifically Lauren Hughey and Sarah Lopez. “That was exciting,” Waite said.

Goals were also scored by sophomore Galen Gomez and juniors Hana Smith and Lydia Brambila. Junior Lizzy Eskue had two assists.

The Guac Girls lost four of their five games and tied the fifth. On May 24 they lost 5-3 to the Flyers team composed of Scripps Ranch High School players and fell 2-1 to the Rancho Buena Vista squad.

The following day they lost 1-0 to Saratoga and 5-0 to the Rush all-star team from San Diego County.

On May 26 the Guac Girls faced the Big Green team based at Helix High School and played to a 2-2 tie.

“The girls played well. A lot of them really stepped up,” Waite said.
