Hughes, Youman, Dornon earn awards at volleyball banquet

The Fallbrook High School boys volleyball team banquet May 20 at Sourdough Pizza saw awards given to seniors Taylor Hughes, Saber Youman, and Bryce Dornon.

Hughes was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player, Youman received the Most Improved Player honors, and Dornon received the Coaches’ Award.

Hughes had previously been voted the Avocado League’s Player of the Year for volleyball. He was the 2008 team’s only returning starter.

“It was pretty much unanimous,” Fallbrook coach Tom Saunders said of the team vote for Hughes. “Kind of a no-brainer.”

Hughes has also been voted the team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2007 season. He played baseball as a freshman and sophomore.

The Most Improved Player was also selected through a team vote. “I wasn’t real sure how the vote would go,” Saunders said.

Saunders has no objections to the selection of Youman, a middle blocker. “He came in not having played before,” Saunders said. “He came a long way.”

Dornon was an opposite hitter in 2007, but 2007 junior varsity setter Jeff Kolb was converted to a libero during club play and Dornon switched to setter for 2008.

“That’s the most difficult position to learn,” Saunders said. “He came along and he did it at a pretty good level. He picked it up pretty quick.”

Dornon earned second-team Avocado League honors as a setter this year.

During the banquet many of the parents told Saunders how much their children had enjoyed being on the volleyball team.

“I was particularly touched,” Saunders said. “I was just pleased to hear that so many of the guys liked the sport.”

Saunders noted that the parents’ involvement wasn’t limited to the season-ending banquet.

“The parents, they’ve been good all season, showing up and supporting the team,” he said.
