Again I say trust

I woke up this morning overwhelmed on a lot of different fronts. (I’d tell you all my woes, but you have your own to deal with.) Sometimes it just gets to be too much. My tail was dragging. I sat in my chair, cupped my heavy head in my hands and dramatically leaned forward until it rested on my bed. I asked God for some strength today.

Instead of throwing on my sneakers and running out the door to the gym, I had this powerful urge to pick up my Bible. And there it was – a proverb I had highlighted so long ago that the florescent yellow had faded to near transparency. “Listen to this wise advice, follow it closely, for it will do you good, and you can pass it on to others: Trust in the Lord.” It reminded me of a verse I wrote down affixed to my calculator by Pema Chadron. During prayer “we are placing our fearful mind in the cradle of loving kindness.”

Then when I got to work Pastor Jerome reminded our staff of the following reading in Luke 12:32 as he prayed: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.” Read that again… take it in… He is pleased to give you the kingdom. In the midst of our struggles he promises the kingdom. His kingdom! And it pleases him to make you a part of it!

One thing I can tell someone who struggles with God. Faith is not the same as religion. Some people have had very negative experiences with church affiliations. But that has nothing to do with God—that has to do with mere mortal man. Faith in God – true faith – means a relationship with the one who created you. In Christianity, the one who made himself a sacrifice to draw all men to the truth of whom God is – God is love. And he wants to tell you how precious you are in his sight, and that he sent his only son to die a horrible death (at the hands of mere mortal man) to take on our sins to prove it. God sent this struggling person to read her Bible this morning, so that she could read about trusting him.

David said: “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy and be glad all our days (Psalm 90:12).” So if you struggle with faith or situations in your life, throw caution to the wind and simply trust God. To do so means eternal life in the kingdom God is pleased to offer all of us who believe and why faith matters!
