SDG&E announces ways to save energy

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) is offering a wide range of programs to help consumers save energy this summer, one of which is the Summer Saver program. Participating in these programs can help SDG&E maintain a reliable energy supply.

“Summer means air conditioning for those San Diegans who do not live on or near the coast,” said Hal Snyder, vice president of customer programs for SDG&E. “We know it’s not realistic to forgo air conditioning altogether, but setting your thermostat to 78 degrees and making sure it’s running efficiently will help save energy as well as money.”

The Summer Saver program benefits the entire region. Participants reduce electricity use and in return get an annual credit on their SDG&E bill.

SDG&E installs a free device on a home’s central air conditioning unit that cycles the unit “on and off” a few hours on a limited number of summer days, usually about 10 to 15 days total.

Participants can choose from a variety of options and earn bill credits from approximately $25 up to almost $195. Visit http://www.summersaverprogram.com for more information or to enroll.

Easy energy-saving tips for home or office

• Set thermostat at 78-80 when at home or in the office; turn off or set at 85 degrees when away.

• Use major appliances after 7 p.m .; unplug small appliances when not in use.

• Use ceiling fans to help circulate air.

• Close blinds, shades or drapes during the hottest part of the day to block the sun’s heat.

• Turn off computer monitor when away.

• At the office, turn off half the overhead lighting while working and turn off all lighting, printers, computers and monitors when leaving for the day.

• When buying room air conditioners or other appliances make sure they are Energy Star rated. Before purchasing check with SDG&E to see if rebates are available.
