Murphy named team MVP at Warrior baseball banquet

The Fallbrook High School baseball banquet was held May 29 at the home of assistant coach Gary Carter, and Clark Murphy was presented with the award for being the team’s Most Valuable Player.

The banquet also saw Cody Chavez receive the Coaches’ Award and Sonny Hughey, Ethan Province, and Kevin Vandivort leave the banquet with Scholar-Athlete awards.

“Banquet went well,” said Fallbrook head coach Jesse Schuveiller.

Murphy, a senior outfielder and first baseman, also earned the team’s Silver Slugger award. “Clark’s just a tremendous player and has so much raw potential,” Schuveiller said.

That talent hasn’t kept Murphy from efforts to improve himself. “He does not take it for granted. He works hard at it every day,” Schuveiller said. “He really loves baseball.”

Hughey, Province, and Vandivort were all seniors. Hughey was an infielder, Province pitched and played in the outfield, and Vandivort was a pitcher and infielder. All three had grade point averages exceeding 4.0 during the season.

“It was encouraging that they kind of set the pace for the rest of our team as far as academics is concerned,” Schuveiller said.

Chavez was a senior infielder. “Just a tremendous effort whether he’s in the game or out of the game. Just a great kid to be around,” Schuveiller said.

The Warriors, who had 11 seniors but only four seniors with previous varsity baseball experience, finished the 2008 season with a 12-17 overall record and a 7-8 Avocado League mark which placed third in the conference standings.
