Temecula grandma delivers Fallbrook baby!

Temecula resident Judy Carney, 51, started out Monday, June 30, like any other day.

That was until she got a phone call that would change her ordinary day into a day that she would never forget.

Her daughter, Annelise Gonzales, 22, called around 8:30 a.m. saying that her hips and back were hurting and thought she was in labor.

Annelise, who lives in Fallbrook, was about 10 days short of her due date.

Carney quickly told her daughter, who was scheduled to deliver at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, to come to her home in Temecula and together they would go the hospital.

While a roommate was driving Gonzales to her mother’s home, Carney called Rancho Springs to let them know she would be bringing her daughter in.

As soon as Gonzales arrived it was apparent that she was in labor. Carney realized that she needed help, so she called her husband Dave, who works in Temecula, to come home.

While she was on the phone, she heard Gonzales scream out. Carney rushed to her daughter’s side to find that her grandchild was just about ready to be born.

“It was the most surreal experience that I have ever had,” said Carney, who immediately sprang into action and delivered her first grandchild.

Six-pound, 15-ounce Scarlett Ann Lewis was born at 9:21 a.m.

“I picked her up, washed her face, eyes and nose, wrapped her in a towel and gave her to Annelise to hold while I called 9-1-1,” explained Carney. “Here I was looking down at my granddaughter, while trying to calm my daughter, who never expected in her wildest dreams to have her baby at home. I didn’t know if I should cut the cord or wait for help.”

Shortly thereafter, paramedics arrived and, after a quick examination, whisked mother and baby to Rancho Springs, where they spent the night under observation.

“I was really scared and surprised,” said Gonzales, later at her mother’s home. “Being in labor was nothing like anyone had ever described to me.”

Gonzales went on to explain that her fiancé, Lance Cpl. Mike Lewis, was on U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton at the time and didn’t know that Gonzales had gone into labor, let alone had already delivered the baby.

Lewis found out about the birth from a roommate when he made a quick stop at the apartment to get his cell phone charger. He jumped back in the car and met Gonzales and Scarlett at Rancho Springs.

“Everything happened so fast, I didn’t even have time to call Mike,” said Gonzales.

“I am just so glad my mom was home. I don’t know what I would have done with out her,” Gonzales said as she cuddled her new daughter.
