The 2008 San Diego County Fair was a sizzling success for the students of the Fallbrook FFA. The weather was hot but the time the students and their animal projects spent together was worth it. Steer, goat, pig and lamb projects were a part of it.
I asked Raquel Varela how her experience at fair was; she responded, “Well, fair always has its ups and downs. There’s the stress that’s built up all year, the nervousness of not knowing what the future will hold and the happiness or disappointment that you feel when you sell your animal at auction.
“Personally, my fair week was great. Milton and I got third in market, fourth in pen of three and second in showmanship, so I am very happy with my results. I also sold him for $3.25 per pound on the Fourth of July.
“That was the bittersweet day. I was happy with the price, but when you devote your time to something for eight months, you really get attached. Saying goodbye was the most difficult thing for me. But, overall fair was pretty amazing this year.”
Raquel had a steer. Let’s just hope the 2008-2009 year brings more amazing times at the San Diego County Fair.
