Grange families get going; Bonsall fares well too

Thirteen members of Rainbow Valley Grange’s Youth Fair Team participated in the San Diego County Fair this year. Their entries included dairy goats, pygmy goats, market goats, one steer, one dog and two riders in the horse events.

Highlights of the team’s efforts included Jenna Lathrop winning the Senior Market Goat Showmanship title and finishing seventh in Master Showmanship. Missy Dunckel finished fourth in Senior Showmanship, while her brother Chris earned second place in Novice Showmanship with their market goats. Aspen Komski earned third place in Junior Bred ’n Fed as well as first in her class for Market Goats.

All of the team’s market animals earned blue ribbons this year. Five goats and the steer were sold in the auction.

Andrew, Shavonne and Kiera Donoghue made it to the fair with their pygmy goats who survived the Rice Fire last October when the family’s house burned down. Kiera earned a second place in Junior Pygmy Goat Showmanship and was asked to compete in Master Showmanship when the first place winner could not make it.

In the 4-H Dog Show, Junior Grange member Sea Jay Bates won the Beginning Novice Obedience Award and the All-Age “High in Trial” Obedience Award.

Besides showing their animals, four of the girls also worked at the fair as members of the youth advisory board. Missy Dunckel, Sarah Fontana, Jenna Lathrop and Maddie Varvel helped fair officials during judging of the various species and during the livestock auction.

Two of the team’s mothers were busy themselves competing in the Boer Goat Show the first weekend of the fair. Tracy Lathrop showed four goats while Cynthia Komski showed 14, including the Grand Champion Senior Champion Full Blood Boer Goat.

The kids all worked hard during the fair and plan to enter their project books in this year’s California State Grange Expo in Sacramento this October.
