What do batteries and books have in common?

The County Department of Environmental Health is partnering with the San Diego County Library to provide collection containers for household battery recycling at 10 library branches, including the one in Fallbrook.

The pilot project is funded by a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board and is aimed at increasing awareness of battery management requirements and providing convenient collection services.

Household batteries are considered “universal waste” by the State of California. While less of a risk than other hazardous chemicals, universal wastes can be toxic to the environment if not managed properly.

Other universal wastes include used fluorescent bulbs, waste electronics and products containing mercury, such as thermometers.

For more information on proper disposal of batteries and other household wastes, call the County Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at (877) R-1-EARTH or (877) 713-2784 or visit http://www.WasteFreeSD.org.
