Support local lifesavers in Lifeguard Games

Lifeguard teams in San Diego and Imperial counties are pooling their rescue skills in hopes of winning the 2008 Lifeguard Games.

Sponsored by the local American Red Cross with the generous support of Edward Jones of Bonsall, the competition takes place Saturday, August 2, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Carlsbad Community Swim Complex, 3401 Monroe Street, Carlsbad. Competitions will begin at 5 p.m.

Along with providing a venue for good-natured competition, the Lifeguard Games allow participants to refresh their skills, build team unity and meet fellow guards from other swimming pools in San Diego and Imperial counties.

Teams of two lifeguards representing pools at private clubs and public recreation facilities from both counties will compete in a series of team and individual events throughout the day, including submerged victim towing, shallow water backboarding, two-person CPR and AED, 50-meter front crawl swim with rescue tube, 50-meter breaststroke with rescue tube, 10-pound brick carry and an obstacle course. Lifeguards may participate in the team event as well as individual competitions.

Local Edward Jones representative Kent Borsch is pleased to support the competition and commends those who work to save lives.

“The American Red Cross was a significant help to the residents of Bonsall and Fallbrook when we were forced to evacuate our homes during the October wildfires,” Borsch, a financial advisor, said. “We are proud to show our thanks by supporting the American Red Cross in this event.”

All American Red Cross certified lifeguards and lifeguard instructors are qualified and welcome to participate. Spectators are encouraged to cheer on their favorite team. There is no charge to attend.
