Camping safety with fires

Wildfires are on the increase. The incredible fact is that most wildfires can be prevented. Campers can help Cal Fire by building their campfires away from overhanging branches, steep slopes, logs, dry grass and leaves.

People should clear a 10-foot-wide circle from flammable material around their campfire, always keep a bucket of water close by and never leave a fire unattended. A sudden wind could come up and spread the fire when no one is there.

Campfires should be extinguished, not buried, by mixing water and soil with the hot ashes, then carefully checked for heat with the back of one’s hand. Remember, be fire safe, not sorry!
