Code enforcement storefront open Mondays

A request from community members has resulted in an officer from the County of San Diego Code Enforcement being placed here on Mondays.

Code Enforcement Officer Tom Causey has been provided desk space at the Fallbrook Sheriff’s Substation, 388 East Alvarado Street, where he can assist local residents.

“There has been a lot of interest from the folks in Fallbrook wishing to have someone from our department there,” said Pam Elias, chief of the Code Enforcement Division of the Department of Planning and Land Use. “A storefront in Fallbrook was picked because of that interest.”

Elias is pleased that her division has been given the opportunity to have Causey in Fallbrook every Monday.

Causey’s areas of responsibility, Elias explained, will include zoning issues relating to residential and commercial properties and signage.

“Zoning regulates what you can do on your property,” explained Elias. “We also enforce legal accumulation of waste and deal with removal of inoperable vehicles.”

Other areas Causey will focus on will be building code violations, construction without permits, illegal storage of trailer coaches, number of animals on a property and improper grading and clearing. His efforts will cover an array of code enforcement responsibilities.

Although Causey is not focusing on noise limit enforcement, Elias says Causey can take the complaint and forward the information to the appropriate individual in that department.

In Fallbrook, signs appear to be an issue of ongoing concern.

“Building code violations and zoning are other big issues in Fallbrook,” reported Elias. “There are a fair amount of people operating their businesses in a way that are not compliant with the zoning ordinances.”

Some businesses, explained Elias, might very well require a permit for regulatory compliance.

Having Causey at the Fallbrook storefront on Mondays is a way to reach out to the residents of Fallbrook who have questions or concerns.

“On Mondays, people can drop in and talk with Tom,” said Elias.

Residents can have their questions fielded and discuss their situations to make certain they are up to code, she added.

Although Causey will have documents to refer to at the office in order to answer general questions, detailed questions would be best addressed at the main office in San Diego, Elias said. But visiting first with Causey will always be a good place to start, Elias said.

If residents have concerns about possible violations on a neighbor’s property, Elias invites them to speak with Causey. If the concern warrants further investigation, he will visit the site.

In addition to Fallbrook, Causey also works in Bonsall, De Luz and areas north of the San Luis Rey River.

This new code enforcement storefront in Fallbrook is designed to bring more personalized assistance to residents.

“I think [the storefront] provides someone with a face; residents can come in and talk to Tom about any concerns they may have in the community,” Elias said.
