Warrior baseball players earn Avocado League honors

Five members of Fallbrook High School’s baseball team have earned all-league honors.

The Avocado League’s coaches selected Clark Murphy to the first team and Chase Johnson to the second team. Warrior players Sam Murphy, Sonny Hughey, and Cory Labouve received honorable mention all-league recognition.

“They deserve every single piece of recognition they get. They’re tremendous competitors and they take baseball very seriously,” said Fallbrook head coach Jesse Schuveiller. “I’m very proud of them for accomplishing that.”

Matt Cerda of Oceanside edged out Clark Murphy for the league’s Most Valuable Player honors. “Clark was right there,” Schuveiller said of the Warriors’ senior outfielder and first baseman. “Clark and Matt Cerda were kind of fighting for the Avocado League Player of the Year.”

Oceanside won the Avocado League championship while Fallbrook placed third in the conference standings with a 7-8 record. The Warriors finished the season with an overall 12-17 mark.

Johnson threw a no-hitter against El Camino April 10 and earned second-team recognition as a pitcher. “That’s pretty impressive as a sophomore,” Schuveiller said.

Sam Murphy, an infielder who was a junior during the 2008 season, will join Johnson as an all-league player expected to return to the Warriors for 2009. The all-league honors close out the careers of the two seniors who earned honorable mention accolades; Hughey played infield for the Warriors while Labouve was the team’s primary catcher.
