Rotary learns about sunken ships

Master scuba instructor Ron Fonstad recently addressed Bonsall Rotary regarding the sinking of ships for fun and ecology.

Fonstad, of the Temecula Scuba Center, has a record of hundreds of dives off the US coast to ships that were sunk, both accidentally and on purpose.

More than 400 Navy ships are decommissioned and waiting their fate. Ships 2 Reefs offers a cheaper, more useful and ecological program for converting these ships into underwater adventure sites for divers. As an additional benefit, they attract all kinds of aquatic life.

This balance of nature and planned burial of the nation’s rusting fleet makes for an exciting opportunity for 12,000 divers a year for Southern California.

Bonsall Rotary meets weekly at the San Luis Rey Country Club. For more on the group, see http://www.bonsallrotary.com.
