RE: 'Defacing nature should have consequences' [Letter, Village News, 7/24/08]

The defacement and littering of the Santa Margarita Trails, a true natural community resource, pains all of us in the Fallbrook Trails Council who volunteer to preserve and maintain them as stewards of the land for the Fallbrook Public Utility District. Anyone who respects the beauty and serenity of the river and its trails is always welcome to enjoy them.

We are aware of the small number of ill-meaning people who damage vehicles, do not carry out what they carry in, smoke in this prohibited area, do not leash or clean up after their dogs, consume alcohol, leave trash, have campfires and graffiti inanely.

Nevertheless, the appreciation by our group and many other individuals for this wonderful resource compels us, the majority, to continue our voluntary efforts on behalf of this worthwhile cause. We also encourage everyone using the Santa Margarita Trails to be vigilant for any of the above actions.

The Fallbrook Trails Council’s next volunteer workday is scheduled for Saturday, August 9, from 8 a.m. to noon. We encourage anyone who is interested in helping with light to moderate trail work to join us beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the FPUD parking lot.

Our all-volunteer Trails Council also accepts donations to further help us maintain the trails. Contact Joe Comella at (760) 731-3909 or Donna Gebhart at (760) 731-9441.
