Businesses can help save money on weddings

Planning a “dream” wedding can be a stressful and challenging time.

Trying to fit everything into the budget can almost seem impossible. Finding the perfect location, wedding gown and all the extras can add up quickly. Deciding what to serve guests, choosing the music and the wedding cake has given many brides countless sleepless nights.

Some area businesses are helping ease the financial burden with ideas that are gaining in popularity: renting a designer wedding gown and/or renting a beautifully decorated wedding cake.

Don’t keep the dress ‘hanging around’

Where brides of the past lovingly packed away their wedding gowns with the thought of passing their dress down to their daughters, now many brides opt to wear the latest fashion styles and trends.

Temecula businesswoman Eva Meloy of the Bridal Suite has the perfect solution.

“Since you only wear the dress once, why not rent a gorgeous designer gown for a fraction of the cost?” says Meloy. “Many end up giving away or selling their dresses to resale shops. By renting a dress you can wear the dress of your dreams and look spectacular.”

Meloy explains that if the bride decides that she would like to keep the “borrowed” gown, it can be purchased for a drastically reduced price, compared to what the gown originally cost. If not, the dress is given back and waits for another bride to rent it.

Meloy was the Dressmaking Couture at Euphorica in Studio City and has more than 30 years in the wedding and seamstress business. She is also an accomplished makeup artist and hairstylist who runs a successful wedding planning service.

“If the gown or veil needs alterations, it’s not a problem,” adds Meloy. “If the bride just can’t find that perfect something I can create it, whether it be designing a new wedding gown, making a new veil or creating a new piece of jewelry.”

Let them eat cake

Another idea to consider is renting a wedding cake. With the price of wedding cakes skyrocketing, more and more brides are looking for alternatives to the traditional cake. Assorted desserts, cupcakes on a tier and smaller cakes are being substituted for the large, elegantly decorated tiered cake.

Companies such as Elegance on Display in Fallbrook are supplying brides with elegant and economical alternatives.

Jennifer Duarte, owner of Elegance on Display, has had requests from brides trying to trim wedding costs. Duarte has several “display” cakes that she will rent to her brides purchasing sheet cake for their guests at a nominal charge.

“What some brides are doing is renting one of my display cakes for the photos of the bride and groom cutting the cake. A real slice of cake is behind the display cake and brought out after the photos are taken, then the bride and groom feed each other the real cake for additional photos,” says Duarte.
