Dog day of summer

RAINBOW—On August 9 members of Rainbow Valley Grange and Junior Grange welcomed a special guest to their one-day mini-camp. Local dog trainer David Greene visited with two of his dogs to give tips on how to train a dog.

Greene explained that the key is in repetition, as dogs learn by doing the same thing over and over again. “They also need to be rewarded for doing what you want them to do,” he added.

He then demonstrated the results of good training with his dogs Eddie and Luigi. Eddie, a Jack Russell terrier, is not formally trained but follows directions well. Luigi, a Belgian Malinois, is training in Schutzhund, a dog sport testing obedience, tracking and protection. Greene showed how he trained Luigi to keep his eyes on him at all times by carrying a ball that Luigi likes to play with as his reward.

Greene and Luigi will be competing at the American Working Malinois Association National Championships in Olympia, WA, next month.

Before the talk on dog training, Grange members, both adults and children, made sun-catchers and silhouettes to enter in the Grange Expo in October. The younger members also enjoyed a water balloon fight. The day ended with dinner and Bingo after their business meetings. For more information on Grange activities, call (760) 489-9502.
