Vista, Fallbrook congregations celebrate Golden Plate Awards

VISTA — Saturday, August 23, was a night for red carpets and paparazzi as more than 300 members from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fallbrook and Vista gathered for the Golden Plate Awards.

Organized by Phyllis Livingston, youth from 10 different congregations participated in creating videos to be shown to all who gathered at the Bobier building in Vista on that night.

The theme was “Alice in Bibleland.” The five-minute-long videos sent a modern-day Alice back in time to witness different bible stories. Not only did the youth help write the scripts and act in the short films, but they also helped in editing the movies. Each congregation then presented the movie for judging and prepared a scene from their story, which would be on display on the night of the Golden Plate Awards. An array of snacks was also provided that tied in with each congregation’s story.

Aram Anderson, who spoke his native Russian, and Sam Flor, who spoke his native Spanish, were among the many young people who couldn’t speak the same language for the second ward in Fallbrook with their rendition of the Tower of Babel. That congregation won the Golden Plate for Best Sound Effects.

Shaely Norris’s mother, Cyndi, used her costumes and wrote the script for “The Exodus” and won the Golden Plate for Most Original Video. They are from the Fallbrook fifth congregation. The Fallbrook first congregation won Best Special Effects for their version of “Daniel and the Lion’s Den.” Alene Ahrend was on hand to pick up that Golden Plate.
