Adachi speaks to Village Rotary about koi

FALLBROOK — At a recent meeting of Fallbrook Village Rotary, Takimi Adachi of California Koi Farms spoke on the subject of koi. He reviewed the history of the fish, how it was saved by a few breeders in Japan during World War II, then purchased in the Hawaiian Islands, and from there made their way to the mainland.

Adachi explained what makes a koi valuable: color, symmetry of the coloration and size. Farming koi is labor intensive, he said. At various stages of a koi’s life, Adachi said, each fish must be examined closely to determine their ultimate salability and only the best remain.

Adachi sells to individuals and to wholesale merchants across the United States using a unique shipping method. He explained how oxygen is pumped into a plastic bag, the bag is boxed securely, and said there is enough oxygen to last the fish for at least 48 hours.

California Koi Farms is located on Gird Road and welcomes visitors.
