'Trekkers' to share experiences

Each year, eighth grade students with math and science potential are selected to attend the American Association of University Women (AAUW) -sponsored science camp, known as Tech Trek, at University of California, San Diego. The scholarships are from fundraisers and donations including the AAUW Garden Tour, funds collected from mahjong tournaments and more.

The students have a week of hands-on experience in the fields of chemistry, math, computer science, physiology, biology and physics. Included this week was a day at Sea Camp, which involved a boat trip on Mission Bay, during which a net was dragged to bring in and view many species of sea life up close. Then, the seal life was returned to the water, unharmed.

The girls also had the opportunity to snorkel at the Ellen Browning Scripps, La Jolla Coves Ecological Preserve. Some of the girls also made rockets and others learned the chemical formulas for making ice cream.

The girls will relay some of their most memorable experiences at the group’s general meeting November 8 at the Fallbrook Woman’s Club. The students are from Potter Junior High School and Norm Sullivan Middle School.
