North County Fire board endorses fire tax

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 26, the North County Fire Protection District Board of Directors unanimously voted to support the proposed fire parcel tax that will appear on the November ballot.

Board members also directed Fire Chief Bill Metcalf to actively work to educate members of the communities of Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow about the ballot initiative and the impact it will have on the fire district and county-wide fire efforts.

During the discussion that preceded the vote, board members acknowledged that fixing the many flaws in county-wide fire protection will be complicated. However, the proposed ballot initiative is clearly a positive step in the right direction, since it will directly address real, tangible shortcomings – insufficient fire apparatus and insufficient aerial assets – that were identified following last October’s fire siege.

Chief Metcalf said, “Improvement of fire protection in the county involves a two-step process: strengthen existing local departments and add resources at the county-wide level. This initiative will do both.”
