A Homecoming parade is a memory maker

Homecoming has always been a thrill, and when it is celebrated with a parade, even more so. I applaud the youth of Fallbrook High for their new Homecoming community projects; however, I have a suggestion for a Homecoming parade that the students would be able to enjoy alongside their community work.

Where I was raised, the San Francisco Bay Area, my high school, as well as the majority of our rival schools, had parades that didn’t require a lot of fuss but were enjoyed by all. We simply decorated our cars and then paraded them down our main street. Clubs, cheerleaders and individuals all participated and were equally lauded. Spectators in lawn-chairs lined the streets and cheered for their favorites.

It was an entire community event which didn’t cost a penny to view. The cars were decorated with tissue paper flowers, colorful signs, papier-mché mascots or other symbols of school spirit. Friends with convertibles were especially popular during this time of the year!

The parade was one of the year’s highlights, and even 30 years later at a class reunion, the old photos and yearbooks were pulled out and all that marvelous excitement was re-lived. Downtown Fallbrook is a picture-perfect setting for a car parade, as evidenced by our highly successful Christmas Parade. It’s something to think about.
