Walter Myers

Walter Myers, 86, passed away September 11, 2008. He was born September 21, 1921, to Ethel (née Cailey) and Walter Alexander Myers in Paxton, IL. As a young child, after his father’s untimely death, he moved to Flint, MI. Walt graduated from Flint Central High School and attended Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Walt also worked for General Motors in Flint. While employed at GM, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in March of 1943. He served as a flight instructor until the end of WWII and was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in October of 1946. During his time in the service, he met Verna Bernecker; they married on September 28, 1943.

They moved to Flint after the Army and Walt went to work for J.C. Penney Co. This job gave them the privilege of living in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan and California. He retired at age 62, his management career with J.C. Penney having lasted 38 years.

A few years before retirement, Walt and Verna purchased land and built a home in Bonsall. They moved to Fallbrook in the mid-1980s and both became active church members of Zion Lutheran Church. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.

Walt is survived by Verna, his wife of 65 years; daughter Cathryn Myers Schueler and son-in-law Mitch Shueler; and loving caregiver Consuelo Suarez.

Services were held on September 15. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be given to Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund in memory of Walter Myers.
