Volunteers needed for Community Center cleanup

For almost a year now the Fallbrook Community Center has been somewhat rough around the edges due to tents that were set up and the many people who came in and out the doors during the fire evacuation last year. Since there were no funds available for cleanup, Anne Anderson of Fallbrook, who is a part of Volunteer San Diego, asked if the center could be designated as one of the organization’s community center renovation projects.

Volunteer San Diego looks for projects that will significantly impact the community as a whole. This year, their “signature project” will include 15 “Recreation Center Renovations” around the county.

The local cleanup/renovation day will be held on Saturday, September 27, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

About 50 to 75 volunteers are needed to complete various tasks around the community center. Volunteers need to be at least 12 years of age and those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should bring their own tools such as rakes and shovels, cleaning supplies and a water bottle, gloves and hat. Lunch will be provided by the staff at the Fallbrook Community Center.

Community Center Director Gordon Stone has decided on several projects, which include weeding and creating a drought-tolerant sample garden, among others. According to Anne Anderson, the Center is seeking donations of plants to be used in the landscaping projects, including the drought-tolerant garden.

Stone said, “I am excited to have people from our local community helping.” He mentioned that the Community Center staff has done a lot of preparation work for this project. Stone is also pleased about the drought-tolerant garden and said that there are many interesting and colorful plants that fall into the category of drought-tolerant.

Anderson also mentioned that damage was done to the grass during the evacuation and in a year it has not recovered, so one of the projects will be reseeding the lawn. She also mentioned that the Center would appreciate the help of someone with knowledge of sprinkler systems.

Some painting, window washing and replacing of “wattles” will be done, according to Anderson. Wattles are straw cylinders used for erosion control.

“We would like to make this an annual event to keep the center in good repair,” Anderson noted. “The spirit of volunteering is alive and well in Fallbrook.”
