Live Oak Elementary goes green

The Live Oak Falcons have begun an extensive ‘Go Green’ project. The students are all excited about making their school a cleaner place to be. They are beginning to be mindful of the three ‘R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle.

As a school they have begun recycling paper, water bottles, cans and green waste. Fallbrook Refuse has donated seven recycle bins that have been place around the school and students and staff are recycling daily. A Live Oak parent, Mr. Conyers, will be transporting the recyclables to the recycle center.

The second part to this Go Green project is a whole school garden. Jerry Weiss, former owner of Rocky Peak; Hilga, a parent; and Pete, a local Master Gardner, have all adopted the school. They will begin to develop a garden aligning with each grade level’s social studies standards.

For example, third grade learns about their community = San Diego plants, fourth grade learns about their state = native garden, fifth grade learns about the United States and sixth grade studies world history.

Every Friday Live Oak produces a live broadcast for the school. They have incorporated a ‘Live Oak Goes Green News Flash’ giving students tips to help their school be more earth-friendly. Teachers have introduced topics on reusing scratch paper, using less paper towels to dry hands, turning off lights when leaving classrooms and much more.
